Cotton sateen fitted sheet
Cotton sateen owes its soft, slightly luminous surface to a particular weave. Although it may appear more delicate, it can still be machine-washed at 40°C. Avoid high temperatures, which can affect its shine and suppleness.
Cotton jersey fitted sheet
Knitted rather than woven, jersey is stretchy and pleasant to the touch. Its flexibility makes it easy to put on the mattress. Wash it at 40°C and remove it promptly from the drum: when properly spread out, it wrinkles very little and hardly needs ironing.
Washed linen fitted sheet
Linen requires gentler washing. A first wash for linen at 30 or 40°C preserves its color and characteristic feel. Water that is too hot makes this natural fiber stiff. The good news is that linen becomes softer with each wash, making it a durable choice.
Microfiber, polyester, and polycotton versions tolerate hotter washes, but they are less breathable than cotton. For healthy, natural bed linen, plant-based fibers remain the best choice.
Detergents and products to avoid
A gentle detergent, used in the right amount, cleans effectively without clogging the drum or the fibers. Using too much leaves residue that stiffens the fabric and dulls the colors.
Here are some products to avoid to protect your fitted sheet:
- bleach on colored linen, as it causes irreversible discoloration;
- excessive fabric softener, which reduces cotton’s absorbency and breathability;
- harsh stain removers applied without first testing them on an inconspicuous area.

Should you put a fitted sheet in the tumble dryer?
Air-drying remains the gentlest solution for the fibers. Hang the fitted sheet in the shade, in a well-ventilated room or outdoors, to preserve the vibrancy of the colors and reduce wrinkling.
A tumble dryer is suitable for cotton, provided you choose a low-temperature program. Excessive heat shrinks the fabric and weakens the elastic around the fitted corners. Remove the linen while it is still slightly damp: it smooths out more easily, and ironing is often unnecessary.
Is it necessary to iron a fitted sheet?
Ironing is mainly a matter of personal preference. On percale, an iron set to medium heat smooths the visible flat section. Iron sateen on the reverse side while it is still slightly damp. Jersey and washed linen, meanwhile, look perfectly good slightly wrinkled and do not need ironing.
